Jack Turns Three And Other Denver Activities

Jack Paton Phillips was born May 12, 2012 in Denver, Colorado, a day before his great grand father John Hefton passed away in Stephenville, Texas.
.
He turned three this year and is quite a smart, funny and playful little boy.  We decided to help him celebrate this important milestone with a visit to the Mile High city and enjoy some snuggle time with him and his sister Jane.  I will admit, however, that an invite to eat at the Buckhorn Exchange might have also played into the final decision to go to Denver!  Well, to be completely fair, Jeremy told his Mother that he would take her there for Mother's Day and I just got to tag along.

On Friday, we met Jeremy at his office at Fentress Architects and went to the Buckhorn for lunch.  If you've never been to Buckhorn you should go.  It is Colorado's most historic eating and drinking emporium, started in 1893 by "Shorty Scout" Zietz.  He was given this name by his lifelong friend Chief Sitting Bull. The building contains literally hundreds of animal and bird mounts and a huge historic gun collection.  And, the food is pretty good, too!

Jack is really interested in whales and dinosaurs and already knows many of them by name.  Jane, however, is more comfortable talking about unicorns, fairies and princesses.  So, it was only fitting that Jeremy and Annie would plan a Saturday outing to Denver's Museum of Nature and Science where there just happened to be a special exhibit on unicorns and other mystical creatures.  Of course, there were also plenty of dinosaur bones and interactive activities for kids.  It was raining that day and I think every child in Denver woke up that morning wanting to go to the museum.

Saturday night we had a big party for Jack.  He got lots of fun toys and spent the remainder of the evening playing before crashing!  Oh, and it started snowing lightly that night and on Sunday morning we would wake up to 3-4 inches of snow on the ground.  It made for some beautiful photos but it all but disappeared by the afternoon.  We went out to Aspen Grove for some shopping in the afternoon and that evening had our normal battle to see who was the big winner of the Ticket to Ride game!  Things can get pretty heated over a good, close game of Ticket!

Monday we had to say goodbye to everyone and head back to Texas.  We really had a good time with the kids and hated to leave but plenty of things were awaiting us back home.  We traveled in the snow south of Pueblo but it warmed quickly and soon we were back to the normal heat of Texas.  We will be going back sometime this summer to welcome the next little member of the household and can't wait to see him!

Double rainbows in the sky around Pueblo and storms to the east.

They weren't sure about this big guy.

Getting ready for some good food.

One of the first exhibits as you enter the Museum of Nature and Science.

Jane's favorite exhibit had to be the unicorn and mythical creatures.

Puppet time.  Can you say Grrrrr Jack?

Jack's cake complete with Fire and Rescue characters.

Beautiful tree especially for mid-May!

Love this shot taken from inside the church building.

We were all squinting from the bright sun reflecting off the snow!

Bebe and her little ones and one not so little anymore!

Future soccer star.  We heard he needed a soccer ball.

We love this picture.  Cute as can be!

It's all about perfection and concentration!

The kid is all boy!  Give him a pair of  pliers and a mallet and he
can fix just about anything!

Annie, Jeremy and baby boy (coming in August).

Aspen Grove is one of our favorite shopping areas.

By the end of the afternoon, there was only enough snow for this little guy!

Jeremy found this mannequin's hand and had to have a little fun.

We Just Stopped To Say Hello

In early May we planned a trip to Denver for Jack's 3rd birthday.  Since the trip makes for a long day, we usually leave a day early and spend the night in Abilene which effectively shortens our next day's drive by a couple of hours. Plus, it gives us a chance to see Jordan's family and play with Leighton and Remington.

They are changing so quickly and you can really see it between visits.  But, that's true with all of us as well. Time slips by and before you know it, grand kids are grown, your own kids are where you were a few short years ago and you take a look at yourself and realize you better make the most of the time you have left.  It reminds me of a saying we had in the house long ago that goes like this:

Cleaning and scrubbing can wait 'til tomorrow,
For babies grow up we've learned to our sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs.
Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep!

It is so true, thus we are going to try and spend more time with family yet take time for us to do some bucket list things as well.  Like a friend said, "As long as you can pick up your suitcase, you better take the opportunities and go".  That's easier said than done sometimes!

Bootsy, Leighton's cat, reigning over the playground.

Time for a little Leighton entertainment and air guitar!

Remington is a happy guy as long as he can chew on those fingers!

The big kahunas enjoying a little down time.
