The San Juan's Are Calling Us........Again

Almost every year since 2005 we have taken a fall trip to Ouray, Colorado.  We really never get tired of it.  There are so many things to see and do, trails, towns and mountains to explore and plenty of time to relax and enjoy the cool weather and the food and the friendships of some great friends.  In 2017 we were glad to have Riney and Karen Jordan join our regular crew.  It was a fun trip and we look forward to going back in 2018.

Day 1:  made it to Alamosa for our usual first night on the way to the mountains.
The end to a long day on the road.

Ready to get a bite at Chili's before stretching out for the night.  When you're pulling
the trailer and Jeep, you learn to watch for parking lots to pull into easily.

Ouray coming into view.  You know you're close when see this view.

We have stayed here at River's Edge Motel since 2005.  We had developed a friendship
with owners, but this year they sold it.  While our stay was still nice, it just
wasn't the same without Chad and Dave.  We saw a bear here the first time
we visited here and again last year!

We went with Riney to pick up their rental Jeep.  This was the first time that
Riney and Karen joined us and they, especially Riney, added plenty of humor to our days!

The Jeep rental was just up the street from Rivers' Edge.  I think Beverly
must have been coming to check on us.

One of  the first views on Last Dollar Road.  The snow had already covered
the high country so we stuck to lower trails.

One of our favorite pictures.  How about a house right there in that meadow!

We've shared this before, but someday this old part of the original
True Grit will be gone.

What a view!

Blues skies and aspens!  Can it get any better?

The three amigos stopping along the trail for a picture opportunity.

We got a passerby to take our pictures.
Jerry, Terry, Karen, Riney, Beverly and Danny!

Yours truly.

It's a long way across this country toward Telluride.

Thinking!  But, what am I thinking is the question!

Lunch break on a little overlook along Last Dollar.

My hunky husband!

My, my.  Going Jeeping!  I think she was just cold.
What!!  More mountains!

Nearing Telluride, the center of the wealth universe!

We took the gondola up to Mountain Village.  If you ever go to Telluride,
take the ride.  It's the only free thing in town.

Headed up and looking back.

Higher

higher.....

and finally arriving at Mountain Village!

We've  always wanted to see how the other people live!

It was cold and the girls found a place to warm their backsides!

The girls posing in front of the tribute to the miners of the region.

The Ute Indians were a native tribe in the San Juan Mountain area.

Information concerning the Ute tribe.

Headed back down.  It reminds me of being in Europe!  Not that I've ever been to Europe!

Looking down as we head back to Telluride.

I think they enjoyed it!  Getting to the station was a lot of walking for us.

Pretty view!

My pretty bride!

The village of Telluride.

Main street.

We decided to take California Pass over to Animas Forks.

Lots of color down low on the pass.

Starting up the pass, with a little rain starting to fall.

Riney was a trooper, not having much experience in this crazy thing
we call Jeeping.

Looks like rain and snow is coming in over the mountains.

We headed back down after stopping and talking with others coming
down from the other side.

This is where the infamous bear incident took place.

Filling up for a day on Owl Creek and Silver Jack Reservoir.

Lots of ranch country around Ridgeway.

One of several stops for pictures!

Thick aspens but the color was already beginning to fade!

Riney was telling us one of his stories about his school experiences.

Believe me, he has a lot of them and they keep you laughing.

Lunch is over.  Now for the  return trip,

The gangs all here minus Beverly.

This is the place where another part of True Grit was filmed.   Can you tell
we are True Grit fans?

This is known as Deb's  Meadow, in the shadow of Chimney Rock.

Chimney Rock in the distance.

A closer view of the famous Chimney Rock.

They have replaced the old wooden sign with the new ones.
I like the old ones better, even if they were worn!

The two clowns peering out from behind the sign!

This happened the last night we were there.  This time the bear couldn't
break the cables but we did get to see him trying about three in the morning!
He was no small bear, either!
